Oparin and Haldane
Alexandr Ivanovich Oparin (1894-1980)(left) and J. B. S. Haldane (1892-1964) (right) independendently proposed similar theories regarding the spontaneous origin of life on the primitive earth. Oparin (left) was a Russian biochemist whose 1924 paper did not reach the West until the 1930s. Haldane (right), also a biochemist, is best known to evolutionary biologists for his contributions to population genetics. His 1929 paper on life's possible origins was subsequently reprinted in 1954 (Haldane, J.B.S. 1954. The origin of life. New Biology. 16: 12).
