Homework and Readings for 09/04/08 Modules II: Scaffolds and Crosstalk: The HOG1 pathway and PBS2 scaffold. Each paper is read by only half of the students, as indicated. Paper #1 Posas and Saito, Science 276, 1702 1997 Paper #2 O'rourke and Herskowitz, Genes and Development 12, 2874 1998. Homework: Read your assigned paper. 1. NOT TO TURN IN. Sketch yourself a summary of what the question is and what they found, and sketch out what each figure means (or what confuses you). These notes will assist you in your discussions with your class mates. The notes need only be a sentence or two on each figure to remind you of what is going on. . 2. TO TURN IN: Write a page or so describing the following: a. Main question or issue that the paper you read was addressing. b. Describe a few key observations. Note the central and key observations only; you have to make a judgement about what is central and key, and what is more peripheral. c. Note anything you found especially cool. 3. TO TURN IN: Hand in a paragraph summary of the paper discussed in the last session. That is, if you read the Ste5 paper, write a paragraph on what the Ste11 paper was about. And, if you read the Ste11 paper, write a paragraph on what the Ste5 paper was about. Your summary should be derived from what you understood in class discussion...I really don't want you to go back and read the paper you were not assigned. In general, turn these assignments in at the end of class. If not, turn them in as soon as you get them. The principle value of doing the homework is that it assists you big time in class discussion.
Additional note: The class moves fast. Get as much as you can as we go, and seek out me or your classmates to fill in things that you are not getting. You don't really have to "get" everything, but you should get something from each session. And, as time goes on, you will get more and more from each session...at least thats the idea!
PLEASE HAVE IT TYPED SO I CAN READ IT EASILY. THANK YOU
