Information
Welcome to the website for MCB 473 and MCB 573, Methods in Recombinant DNA Research. This course is designed to introduce students to modern molecular biology in a lab setting, and fulfills lab and writing emphasis requirements.
The syllabus for this semester can be found using the Lectures link above. Information about the course instructors is below. More information about the course will be presented on the first day of class. Links to word files for all projects for the lab can be found on the syllabus at least one week before the project begins. You do not have to print out the entire project, but it will be important to come to class each day with a list of the calculations and manipulations you will have to do that day. The Appendices contain useful information about using the equipment in the lab and some of the procedures you will use during class. Copies of these will be available in class, so it is not necessary to print those out or bring a copy to class.
The textbook for the class, which will be required will be "Principles of Gene Manipulation", Primrose, Twyman and Old.
Grading: There wil be six projects in the class. For every project except the first, there will be a prelab writeup (one paragraph) due the first day of the project, a quiz soemtime during the project, and a lab report after the project has been completed. Grades will be calculated based on the following formula:
Class participation: 20% Class attendance is mandatory unless sick or the instructor has been warned in advance of an excused absence.
Lab reports: 25%
Midterm and Final: 15% each
Quizzes and prelabs: 25%
