Welcome to Biology 181 Honors, Fall 2009.
MENTORING: Hook up with faculty and researchers at UA to explore papers and topics in the literature! Information about the opportunity at the link; this will be covered in class the week of Nov. 19.
Stuff specific to Bruce's (Mon4, Thu5) sections
Enrollment into the Honors sections will be done after the semester starts. You will be able to request to be added to any one of six Honors timeslots
Mon 10-11:15 Lisa
Mon 4-5:15 Bruce
Tue 9:30-10:45 Vince
Wed 11-12:15 Lisa
Wed 2-3:15 Vince
Thu 5-6:15 Bruce
while continuing in your current lecture section. Honors work will be weighted into the final grade for lecture. Students will hear and interact with faculty about faculty research, advance problem-solving skills and increase understanding of Intro Bio topics. The course also features small group work reading a scientific paper in depth or analyzing 'science-y' claims in the media.
If you are interested in getting involved in research, and we hope you are, consider the Undergraduate Biology Research Program UBRP, McNair Achievement Program,
or Minority Access to Research Careers MARC.
Also, consider the entry-level lab jobs that are sometimes posted on bulletin boards: many professors hire someone for
washing dishes or caring for plants or animals, then promote (sometimes quickly) if the person shows promise.
If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, in work opportunities, or in scholarships and internships.
