Sky Island Alliance Have you ever wanted to learn to track wildlife? The Sky Island Alliance trains "citizen scientists" who then monitor a transect for wildlife tracks and sign down near the San Pedro. Training for the next group of trackers is coming up this fall. A one year commitment is required, but I've heard it's really rewarding and fun. If you want to learn more about the Sky Island Alliance, please see their website: www.skyislandalliance.org. For information about wildlife monitoring, choose that link. The Sky Islands refer to the 'islands' of mountains we have around here that are in the desert 'sea'. The ecology is similar in some ways to islands because the desert floor is a formidable barrier. The mission of the Sky Island Alliance is to protect and restore the native biodiversity of this region. For their intensive training session, the application deadline in 2002 was Oct 2 for some things. I presume it will be around the same time this year (2003) but you can contact them. For some events, no training is needed. SASI: Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute This Institute studies those creepy, crawly, and/or flying 'stuff'. Check it out! Visit their main page at http://www.sasionline.org/ and click on "Volunteer Info" Tucson Botanical Garden Has various volunteer opportunities involving their gift shop, gardens and grounds, education, horticulture, library, office work. Even if you don't want to volunteer, it's worth checking out as a quiet in-town little park where you can always learn something. It's about 3 miles from campus off Alvernon just south of Grant. Their main page is at http://www.tucsonbotanical.org/ Of course there are many more opportunities than these, but I guess this is it for starters.
